Facebook Addict

Do you lose sleep just because of spending so much time on Facebook?

OR

Do you think about Facebook even when you are offline?

Yes? According to Elizabeth Cohen, a CNN Senior Medical Correspondent, you might very well be what she calls as a "Facebook Addict"

Facebook

Facebook is one of the most or if not, the most addictive social phenomena ever. You may also think you are simply just a casual user but as we all know, the hallmark of any addiction is the presence of denial. Facebook basically allows people to stay connected with one another. People can express themselves through their profile by stating their activities, interests, favorite music, etc. Facebook allows people to become so open with one another that we can begin to become addicted to it. Even recently based on Facebook's very own Press Room, Statistics amazingly showed..
  • More than 500 million active users to date (2011)
  • 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day
  • Average user has 130 friends
  • People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook

400 million users in just 7 years?? Believe it.

Pros to Facebook
  1. Facebook is a great way to connect with your real life friends online. It helps you to keep in touch with long lost friends. Friends or family living in another country could also be easily connected.

  2. You can play many different games and use many different applications.

  3. You can make many new like minded friends by joining various groups.

  4. You get to share your favourite music or videos with your friends.

Cons to Facebook

  1. Your photos could be misused.

  2. You will waste many hours because Facebook is addictive for most people.

  3. Your friends may tag you on photos that you do not want others to see.

  4. Facebook can cause jealousy. According to a study from the University of Guelph, Canada, the more time you spend on Facebook, the more likely you are to feel jealous.

Clues that you might just be a Facebook Addict
:

  • Are you are spending more than an hour on Facebook ?

  • Are you feeling guilty about something but chose to visit Facebook instead ?

  • Did you give up familiar activities such as sports, homework or going out with friends?

  • Are you changing your profile picture over and over again?
(This is considered to be the earlier signs of addiction)

Ways to overcome Facebook Addiction :

personal.georgiasouthern.edu/~mn00320/pictures.gif

  1. Admit that you are an addict

    - By acknowledging your problem, you can actually move on and proceed to overcoming this addiction. Yes you can !

  2. Keep yourself away from the computer

    - Ask yourself, do you really need to spent so much time on the computer? Instead of this you could actually hit the gym, go shopping(you could actually lose calories while shopping!), play some sports or even hang out with friends. After all, those suggestions are more healthy in lifestyle.

  3. Turn off email notifications

    - How many times have we received an email notification "Email from Facebook" while chatting on MSN? Notifications are like little devils inviting you to Facebook every single time. Turn the notification off. You don’t need to be notified every time someone sends you a message, do you? If it was that important, they would have definitely called you or sent you a direct message by phone.

  4. Set a time limit for visiting Facebook

-For example, you could give yourself the first 20 minutes of the work day you check all your updates and then not log on for the rest of the day. Or you might decide that the last 30 minutes of work is Facebook time as a reward for a long day of super productive work.

  5. Deactivating your Facebook Account

-Many of my friends were addicted to Facebook as well and from what some have told me, deactivating their accounts have definitely benefited them. One of them, Winston, told me that by deactivating, it gave him a mentality that Facebook did not exist to him anymore and helped him focus on other beneficial doings.

An interview held in the United States of America about Facebook and it's affect on our generation.

Before i go, I'd like to take this opportunity to leave you with a food for thought..

Did you know..
Syria, China, Vietnam, and Iran have banned Facebook !

So, say if Singapore were to one day ban Facebook, will we be able to survive ?

Feel free to drop your comments and let me know your thoughts about Facebook addiction!
Thank you!

  1. You have provided some useful points on the topic of facebook addiction and the articles are also helpful in elaborating more on the issue. (A few of the links are duplicated.)

Are there any specific case studies/examples of facebook addiction? Do you know of anyone who's a facebook addict?

It's useful that you also share on how to overcome/prevent the problem.

Writing is generally fluent and also scannable.

As for the question you posed, I think there will be an uproar from the facebook generation in S'pore if it were banned! Btw, why did those countries ban facebook? Was it to protect its people from facebook addiction, or were there other more political reasons?

  2. I liked the way this topic was presented, pictures kept it fun and light hearted and the video at the end gave it a nice ending.

Countries like china ban facebook because of political and social reasons stating that it can possibly corrupt the future generation among other reasons given but if Singapore were to ban facebook, I think that many peopel will be very upset... But having said that, don't you think that in itself is a sign of facebook addiction?

  3. I find this web scannable which is GREAT!1

I agree that people tend to get addicted easily to Facebook. Take me for example, like you said, I always go to Facebook whenever there's a noctification. Am I part of the addicts? Haha.

Maybe your solutions to overcome this problem can come in handy.

Also, I was wondering whether elderlys were addicted to Facebook as well?
    What's your view on this?

  4. I agree that people addicted to Facebook easily, Maybe I am one of them? lol, Anyway, I think it's ok to visit facebook everyday,it's a part of our social life.

  5. Well-detailed yet scannable, i like how you added statistics and graphs to further emphasise your points.

Facebook can help you keep in touch with old friends and also find out more about new friends. However i think it actually weakens social skills.

If facebook was banned in Singapore, the impact would be huge. Almost everyone i know is on Facebook.

  6. Your web is well structured allowing one to be able to look things through in an orderly manner which is totally awesome!

Facebook allows one to meet new friends as well as to kill boredom. But long time addiction will lead to various impacts that you have state in your web.

I just wonder what are the statistics of the age of children owning a facebook account?

  7. I don't deny that facebook allows us to make more friends. Now a lot of phones allows us to access Facebook, don't have to rely on laptop, agree much? I do log in to facebook daily but i never use too long, I just leave it there.

  8. Hmmm...does it count as facebook addiction if you just leave facebook on and do other things. Technically you are not using facebook so that does not count as facebook addiction is it?

  9. Your way of presentation is very neat! :) Most of us are actually Facebook addicts but we don't even realize it. I think more people will be aware of this problem after you've stated the "symptoms" of Facebook addicts. I must admit that it's really hard to kick off the addition of Facebook. What about you? :)

  10. Healthyjunkie : Thank you! Yes I do agree with you that it is definitely hard to kick off the addiction however i feel with time, it is possible to overcome.

Kok Weng : Well i personally don't think leaving your facebook on is considered an addiction but an habit perhaps ?

J : Yes i agree with you on phones allowing facebook access which can be a bittersweet feeling since it entertains you during boredom but then again you might just be hooked to it unknowingly.

Jorina : Thanks! Well, I guess with time, the statistic of children visiting facebook will dramatically increase !

Bryan : Thank you. Yes I do agree as well that banning facebook would definitely leave a huge impact on us.

BaoCheng : Everyday but hopefully not for long hours?

Ronald : Thank you! Yes I'm surely one of them as well to go facebook thanks to notifications. I guess the take on the elderly depends on the younger generation of their family tree? Say if their grandchildren has facebook, chances of them having is higher?

Tiantian : Thank you! Yes i believe many of us would indeed be upset or angry if singapore were to ban facebook however it might not show it as an addiction but the fact of social media decline?

Newmediascapes : Thank you. Yes, i used an example on one of my friend(Winston) who used to be an addict and how he overcame it. Based on the question posed, like tiantian said, it can possibly corrupt the future generation among the country. Political or Protection purposes, the countries definitely did not want to take any risks.

  11. Neat presentation of the topic!

To me, facebook gets boring after a while because there's really nothing much I can do with it! So I would safely say that I will not be a facebook addict.

As to your question, it'll definitely cause some unrest in Singapore should Facebook be banned. Because, well, people are quite dependant on it these days.

  12. Well structured with different media content!
I find "Facebook can cause jealousy" very interesting. Haha

  15. Very neat presentation. Well, Facebook helps me keep in touch with old friends, keeps me updated what my friends are doing, and i could find out more about new friends. I think it's normal to spend more than an hour in Facebook lol. And i think the impact would be huge if Facebook was banned in Singapore.
